What it means
آرژانتین (Ârzhantin) is the Persian name for Argentina, the South American republic. The word arrived in Persian primarily through French “Argentine,” which in turn comes from Spanish “Argentina,” derived from Latin “argentum” (silver). The name refers to the silver that Spanish colonists expected to find in the Río de la Plata region. Residents are called آرژانتینی (ârzhantini), and the same form works as an adjective: تیم آرژانتینی (tim-e ârzhantini) means “the Argentine team.”
How to use it
- آرژانتین قهرمان جام جهانی شد. (Ârzhantin qahramân-e jâm-e jahâni shod.) “Argentina became the World Cup champion.”
- آرژانتین کجای آمریکای جنوبیه؟ (Ârzhantin kojâ-ye âmrikâ-ye jonubie?) “Where in South America is Argentina?”
- بوینوسآیرس پایتخت آرژانتینه. (Buenos Aires pâytakht-e ârzhantin-e.) “Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina.”
- خیلیها آرژانتینیها رو به خاطر مسی میشناسن. (Kheyli-hâ ârzhantini-hâ ro be khâter-e mesi mishnâsan.) “Many people know Argentines because of Messi.”
Cultural note
Argentina is most strongly associated in Iranian popular culture with football, and specifically with Lionel Messi. When Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, a tournament held in a nearby Muslim-majority country, the event attracted enormous attention in Iran. Argentine tango is also known among Iranians interested in world music and dance. There is a smaller but notable Iranian expatriate community in Buenos Aires.
