Last Tuesday I taught a student fifteen new Persian words. Everyday stuff. آب. âb. water, نان. nân. bread, خانه. khâne. house. She repeated each one perfectly. She wrote them in her notebook. She told me she felt good about them.
This Tuesday, she remembered three. The other twelve had vanished. She looked genuinely frustrated, like something was wrong with her brain.

5. Sleep on It
Memory consolidation happens during sleep, specifically during slow-wave sleep in the first half of the night. Studies show that vocabulary studied in the evening and reviewed the following morning shows significantly better retention than vocabulary studied and reviewed within the same day.
Practical implication: study new Farsi words in the evening. Review them the next morning. The sleep between acts as a natural consolidation phase that strengthens the memory traces formed during your study session.

Without any spaced review:

- 100 words studied in a month → ~20-25 retained
