Unlike jânân or negâr, yâr survives into ordinary speech. An older couple might still call each other yâr. Friends in some regions, especially Kurdistan and Lorestan, address each other as yâr without any romantic charge. The word's range is exactly its strength: it covers everything from a war-buddy to a divine beloved.
