وضع

What it means

وضع (vaz) comes from the Arabic root و-ض-ع (w-d-a), broadly meaning to place, to set, or to establish. In Persian the word has settled into the meaning of condition, situation, state, or circumstances. It covers a wide semantic range: the state of your health, the economic situation, the condition of a road, or the general state of affairs in a city or country. The word is genuinely neutral and appears at every level of register, from casual conversation (وضعت خوبه؟: how are you doing?) to journalistic prose (وضع اقتصادی: the economic situation). A very close synonym is اوضاع (owzâ), which is the Arabic plural form and is often used when referring to circumstances in a broader or more formal sense, but in everyday Tehran speech وضع and اوضاع are nearly interchangeable.

How to use it

• وضعت خوبه؟ (vazet khube?) “How are you doing? / Are you all right?”
• وضع مالیم خوب نیست (vaz-e mâliyam khub nist) “My financial situation isn’t good.”
• وضع هوا چطوره؟ (vaz-e havâ chetore?) “What’s the weather like?”
• این وضع نمی‌شه (in vaz nemishe) “This situation won’t do / This can’t go on like this.”

Cultural note

وضعت خوبه is the most common alternative to حالت خوبه when checking on someone in informal Farsi. The two are essentially interchangeable in meaning but وضعت خوبه can carry a slightly more practical edge, asking about circumstances as much as feelings. In times of economic pressure or political uncertainty, Iranians frequently use وضع in broader communal ways: وضع بازار (the state of the market), وضع کشور (the state of the country). The word carries no particular pessimism on its own, but it does absorb the emotional temperature of its context very readily.
