What it means
وفاداری (vafadari) is loyalty, faithfulness, the quality of keeping one’s word and standing by a person across time. The word travels across three domains where Iranian culture takes loyalty seriously: marriage, friendship, and, less often in modern usage, allegiance to a leader or cause. The base وفا (vafa) means fidelity itself; vafadari is the abstract noun of the adjective وفادار (vafadar, loyal).
Iranian moral vocabulary leans heavily on vafadari and its opposite, خیانت (khianat, betrayal). When older Iranians describe a marriage that lasted, they reach for vafadari before they reach for love. When they describe a long friendship, the same. Love is felt; vafadari is proven over years.
How to use it
Use vafadari for the quality, vafadar for the person, and vafa kardan (to keep faith) for the act. The phrase اهل وفاست (ahl-e vafast, he or she is the loyal type) is a high compliment.

Where loyalty lives in Iranian life
In Iranian marriage culture, vafadari carries more daily weight than the English word fidelity, because the implied loyalty extends past sexual exclusivity to financial transparency, family obligation, and emotional availability. A husband who provides money but withholds emotional presence has, in older Iranian framing, a vafadari deficit. In friendship, vafadari is what makes a دوست (doust, friend) a رفیق (rafiq, true companion). The two words are not synonyms; the difference is years of proven loyalty.
Where it comes from
Vafa is Arabic, from the root و-ف-ي (w-f-y, to fulfill, to complete, to keep one’s word). The same root gives وفات (vafat, decease, the completion of life) and ایفا (ifa, fulfillment, performance). Persian added the native suffix ـی (-i) to vafadar, the Persian adjective formed by attaching the productive suffix ـدار (-dar, holder of), giving vafadari, the holding-of-faith. The hybrid construction is classic Persian word-building, an Arabic root with a Persian shell.
