اوه

What it means

اوه (oh) is an interjection expressing surprise, sudden realization, or mild dismay. It is one of the shortest and most spontaneous reaction words in Persian. The vowel is rounded and mid-back, similar to the English oh, and the word is always short and punchy. It differs from آه (âh), which carries a long, sighing quality associated with longing or poetic lament, and from اه (ah), which signals frustration or annoyance. اوه is the surprised oh: the sound a speaker makes when something unexpected is revealed or when they catch themselves making a small mistake.

• اوه، نمیدونستم (oh, nemidunestam) “Oh, I didn’t know that.”
• اوه، یادم رفت (oh, yâdam raft) “Oh no, I forgot.”
• اوه، چه جالب (oh, che jâleb) “Oh, how interesting!”
