What it means
تواضع (tavazo) is humility, modesty, the act of lowering yourself in the presence of others. It is what a senior scholar does when he refuses to take the head of the table. It is what a host does when he insists his cooking is nothing. It is the social posture of refusing to claim height.
Tavazo is universally read as positive in Persian. Unlike ghorour, it does not flip. A person of tavazo is admirable. The word lives in the same neighborhood as forutani (its Persian-rooted twin), adab (manners), sharm (modesty), and haya (decency).
Tavazo and forutani
These two are near-synonyms separated mostly by etymology. تواضع (tavazo) is Arabic, from the root w-d-ʿ (و ض ع, to place, to lay down), literally the act of placing oneself low. فروتنی (forutani) is Persian, built from foru (below) plus tan (self/body) plus the abstract suffix -i. The literal meaning is identical: making oneself below.
Tavazo is the older, more classical word that dominates religious and literary contexts. Forutani is the cleaner, more Pure-Persian option that the Farhangestan (Persian Language Academy) prefers. In journalism and formal speech you hear both. In poetry you hear forutani. In sermons you hear tavazo. Both are alive.
How it shows up
Iranians notice tavazo. A doctor who insists on being called by his first name. A grandmother who refuses the largest piece of meat. A famous writer who calls himself a student. These small moves accumulate into a reputation: ahl-e tavazo ast (he is a person of humility). It is one of the higher compliments Iranian culture pays.

In our voice
Tavazo is the word Iranians use when they want to honor the person who could have claimed status and chose not to. It is a quiet word, and the people it describes tend to be quiet too.
