What it means

فروتنی (forutani) is modesty, the gracious lowering of oneself before others. The literal etymology is transparent: فرو (foru, below, down) plus تن (tan, self, body) plus the abstract suffix -ی (-i). Forutani is the quality of being one-whose-self-is-low.

It is the Persian-rooted twin of تواضع (tavazo), the Arabic word for the same virtue. They mean the same thing. They land in slightly different registers. Forutani is the choice you make when you want a clean, native Persian word with no Arabic borrowing.

Forutani and tavazo

This pair is one of the cleanest examples of the Pure Persian Movement (Farhangestan-e Zaban-e Farsi) at work. For every Arabic-origin abstract noun, Persian often has a native alternative, sometimes coined, sometimes ancient. Forutani is ancient: it shows up in classical Persian poetry alongside tavazo without conflict.

Today some speakers prefer forutani as the more authentically Persian option; others use tavazo without thinking about it. Both are correct. Journalism mixes them. Religious speech tilts toward tavazo. Modern literary prose tilts toward forutani. The choice is partly aesthetic, partly political, mostly habit.

How it shows up

Forutani names the same set of behaviors as tavazo: refusing the head seat, downplaying your accomplishments, treating subordinates as peers, declining flattery. The Iranian reading of these acts is admiring. A person of forutani has won an inner victory you can feel in the room.

Examples

forutani-e u dar barabar-e bozorgtarha qabel-e setayesh ast.

His modesty before his elders is admirable.

فروتنی او در برابر بزرگ‌ترها قابل ستایش است.

ba forutani jayeze ra paziroft.

He accepted the prize with modesty.

با فروتنی جایزه را پذیرفت.

Where it comes from

The construction foru + tan + i is old Persian, transparent to any modern speaker. فرو means down or below (also seen in foru raftan, to sink, to descend). تن means self or body (also seen in tan-darosti, bodily health). Together they paint a literal picture: the person whose self is lowered.

In our voice

Forutani is a quiet flex. It is the word that lets you praise someone for humility using a fully Persian vocabulary, without reaching for the Arabic. The native option, when you want it.
