A2 — Elementary

What it means

تصمیم (tasmim) means “decision” or “resolve.” Borrowed from Arabic ṣ-m-m (صمم), the root of firmness and intention. In Persian it is almost always paired with the verb گرفتن (gereftan, “to take”).

تصمیم گرفتم (tasmim gereftam) literally “I took a decision,” idiomatic “I decided.”

How to use it

  • تصمیم گرفتم برم (tasmim gereftam beram) “I decided to go”
  • تصمیمت چیه؟ (tasmimet chiye?) “What is your decision?”
  • تصمیم سختی بود (tasmim-e sakhti bud) “It was a hard decision”
  • هنوز تصمیم نگرفتم (hanuz tasmim nagereftam) “I haven’t decided yet”

Common pairings

  • تصمیم‌گرفتن (tasmim-gereftan) “to decide”
  • تصمیم‌گیری (tasmim-giri) “decision-making”
  • تصمیم نهایی (tasmim-e nahâyi) “final decision”

Cultural note

Iranian families often layer تصمیم with consultation. A young adult announces تصمیم گرفتم and parents reply با کی مشورت کردی؟ (bâ ki mashverat kardi?, “who did you consult?”). The decision is rarely fully personal. Among friends, تصمیمت با خودته (tasmimet bâ khodete, “the decision is yours”) gives space without pressure.
