What it is
باشگاه سپاهان (Bâshgâh-e Sepâhân) is an Isfahan football club founded in 1953. The name سپاهان is an old form of the city’s name (Isfahan/Sepahan, meaning “the place of armies,” from Middle Persian Spahan, plural of spah, army; same root as English sipahi via Ottoman Turkish). The shirts are yellow. Home ground is Naghsh-e Jahan Stadium (75,000 capacity, named after the famous square), one of the largest in Iran. Sepahan has won the Iranian top division five times since the modern league began in 2001, more than any club outside Tehran.
The ownership context
The club is owned and bankrolled by Mobarakeh Steel Company (فولاد مبارکه, Foulâd-e Mobârakeh), the Isfahan-based steel giant that is one of the largest industrial firms in Iran. This is the typical Iranian club-ownership model: a state-linked or state-tied corporation funds the club as both an industrial-region civic project and a soft-power asset. Sepahan’s stability through league financial crises (delayed salaries elsewhere, exits of clubs that lost their backers) comes from this structure.

The continental record
Sepahan reached the final of the AFC Champions League in 2007, losing to Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan. They have qualified for the continental competition repeatedly since. For Isfahanis, the club is the city’s most visible national-stage representative, the way Persepolis and Esteghlal are for Tehran. The rivalry against the Tehran clubs is the closest thing the Iranian league has to a non-Tehran derby of national interest, though it does not match the Persepolis-Esteghlal match in pure scale.
In context
Isfahanis are proud of Sepahan in the same complicated way they are proud of the city: a deep sense of regional identity that outranks national football allegiances for some, sits alongside them for most. When Sepahan plays Persepolis or Esteghlal in Naghsh-e Jahan, the stadium is full and loud, and the Isfahani accent fills the chants.
