What it is
باشگاه استقلال (Bâshgâh-e Esteghlâl) is a Tehran football club founded in 1945, originally as Dushan-Tappeh (after the neighborhood by Tehran’s eastern airport), then renamed Tâj (Crown) in 1949 under the Shah, then renamed Esteghlâl (استقلال, Independence) after the 1979 revolution. The shirts are blue. Home stadium is Azadi, shared with Persepolis. The club has won the Iranian top division nine times in the modern era and won the AFC Asian Club Championship (the predecessor of the Champions League) in 1970 and 1991.
The three names
- دوشنتپه (Dushan-Tappeh): 1945 to 1949. From the eastern Tehran neighborhood.
- تاج (Tâj, Crown): 1949 to 1979. Sponsored by the Pahlavi establishment.
- استقلال (Esteghlâl, Independence): 1979 to present. Renamed by revolutionary order, alongside Persepolis losing its sponsor links and being briefly renamed Pirouzi (پیروزی, Victory). The Persepolis name was restored later; Esteghlâl kept its revolutionary rename.
The fan base
The Esteghlal narrative paints the club as the side of the older northern Tehran middle class, the inheritance of the Tâj era, though the actual fan base is national and class-mixed. Supporters call themselves آبیها (âbi-hâ, the blues). The relationship with Persepolis defines both clubs more than anything else.

The derby
Esteghlal versus Persepolis is the دربی پایتخت (dârbi-ye pâytakht), the most-watched football fixture in Asia. The match shuts down Tehran for an afternoon. The result is the first thing colleagues check on Sunday morning. Both clubs play out of Azadi, both fan bases hate losing to each other more than they care about the rest of the league. Some seasons that has cost them the title.
The notable alumni
Esteghlal’s roster history includes Nâser Hejâzi (the towering goalkeeper of the 1970s and 80s, voted Asia’s goalkeeper of the twentieth century by the IFFHS), Andranik Teymourian (the Armenian-Iranian who later captained Team Melli and the Tehran derby record-holder for appearances), and Voria Ghafouri (the long-serving captain whose 2022 arrest during the Mahsa protests, for criticizing the state, made international news). The club has a habit of producing players who become political figures whether they wanted to or not.
