What it means
ژاپن (Zhâpon) is the Persian name for Japan. The word was borrowed from the French “Japon,” which is why Persian uses ژ (zh) rather than ج (j) and ends in -on rather than -an. This is a common pattern: Persian adopted several country names through French rather than English during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The adjective form is ژاپنی (Zhâponi), meaning Japanese. A nearby country learners often group with ژاپن is کره (Kore), Korea, as both are East Asian nations well known in Iran.
How to use it
- ژاپن کشوری در آسیاست. (Zhâpon keshvari dar Âsiâst.) “Japan is a country in Asia.”
- ماشینهای ژاپنی معروف هستند. (Mâshinhây-e Zhâponi ma’ruf hastand.) “Japanese cars are well known.”
- توکیو پایتخت ژاپن است. (Tokyo pâytakht-e Zhâpon ast.) “Tokyo is the capital of Japan.”
- غذای ژاپنی دوست داری؟ (Ghazây-e Zhâponi dust dâri?) “Do you like Japanese food?”
Cultural note
Japan holds a distinct place in Persian popular culture, particularly through anime and manga, which have a large and growing fanbase in Iran. Japanese technology brands such as Toyota, Sony, and Honda are household names among Persian speakers, and Japan is frequently cited in Iranian public discourse as a model of rapid industrialization while maintaining cultural identity. The defeat of Russia by Japan in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 was closely followed in Iran and was seen by some Iranian intellectuals at the time as proof that an Asian nation could compete with European powers.
