What it means
سالن (sâlon) means living room, hall, or any large indoor room used for gathering. The word is a direct borrowing from French “salon,” which entered Persian during the twentieth century as Iranian architecture and interior design absorbed European vocabulary. In everyday speech Iranians use سالن to refer to the main sitting room of a house, the same space sometimes called نشیمن (nashiman). In larger contexts سالن covers a cinema hall, a sports hall, a conference room, or a beauty salon, making it a versatile term. A close synonym for the domestic sense is پذیرایی (pazirâyi), which emphasizes the hosting function of the room.
How to use it
- مهمونها توی سالن نشستن. (Mehmunâ tu-ye sâlon nashestan.) “The guests sat in the living room.”
- سالن سینما پر بود. (Sâlon-e sinemâ por bud.) “The cinema hall was full.”
- مبلهای سالن رو عوض کردیم. (Mobl-hâye sâlon ro avaz kardim.) “We changed the living room furniture.”
- سالن ورزشی مدرسه خیلی بزرگه. (Sâlon-e varzeshi-ye madrese kheyli bozorge.) “The school sports hall is very large.”
Cultural note
In Iranian homes the سالن is the social heart of the house, where guests are received and family life unfolds. Furnishing and decorating the سالن carries real cultural weight, since Iranians take great pride in how the room presents itself to visitors. The French origin of the word reflects the broader wave of Europeanization in Iranian domestic vocabulary during the Qajar and Pahlavi eras, when words like سالن, آسانسور, and many appliance names arrived from French and other European languages.
