A2 — Elementary
What it means
فرودگاه (forudgâh) means “airport.” Pure Persian compound formed from فرود (forud, “descent, landing”) and گاه (gâh, “place, time”). Foundation A2 vocabulary, regular fare for any traveler.
How to use it
- به فرودگاه میروم (be forudgâh miravam) “I am going to the airport”
- فرودگاه امام خمینی (forudgâh-e Emâm Khomeyni) “Imam Khomeini Airport” (Tehran main international)
- پرواز از فرودگاه مهرآباد (parvâz az forudgâh-e Mehrâbâd) “flight from Mehrabad Airport”
Common pairings
- پرواز (parvâz) “flight”
- هواپیما (havâpeymâ) “airplane”
- ترمینال (terminâl) “terminal”
- سالن انتظار (sâlon-e entezâr) “waiting hall”
Etymology
The گاه suffix is one of Persian’s most productive: it makes “place of X” or “time of X” nouns. Compare ایستگاه (istgâh, “station”), دانشگاه (dâneshgâh, “university”), and صبحگاه (sobhgâh, “morning time”). فرودگاه is a 20th-century coinage replacing earlier فرودگه.
