What it means
روسیه (Rusiye) is the Persian name for Russia. Persian borrowed the word from Arabic رُوسِيَّة (rūsiyya), which was built from the root “Rus”, referring to the early medieval Rus people, and the Arabic nisba suffix -iyya. The same Arabic suffix pattern produced ترکیه (Torkiye) for Turkey and سوریه (Suriye) for Syria. The adjective form is روسی (Rusi), meaning Russian. Cultural note
Russia and Iran share both a long border along the Caspian Sea and centuries of complex political history, including wars, treaties, and close trade relationships. The Gulistan Treaty of 1813 and the Turkmenchay Treaty of 1828 between Qajar Iran and Czarist Russia are among the most discussed agreements in Iranian history classes. Today Russia remains a significant political and economic partner for Iran, and the Russian language is studied in some Iranian universities as a practical second language.
