پیر

/ pir /
noun  ·  elder, spiritual master

معنی

The word پیر in modern Iranian usage carries deep respect. To call someone پیر is, in most contexts, not an insult about age but an acknowledgment of accumulated experience. Iranian culture, like much of West and Central Asia, places elders at the center of family and social life. The pir is consulted, the pir is listened to, the pir's word can settle disputes that nothing else can settle. This cultural weight feeds back into the Sufi technical sense of the word. The Sufi pir is the elder of the spiritual family, the one whose accumulated experience earns the right to guide. In Iranian Sufi orders, the title پیر is still used for the head of a tariqa. The everyday and the technical senses of the word reinforce each other across centuries of usage.
