What it means
جوان (javân) is one of the most fundamental Persian words and means young or, used as a noun, a young person or youth. It is a native Iranian word with deep Indo-European roots, cognate with Latin juvenis and, through their shared ancestor, distantly related to English young. Its direct antonym is پیر (pir), meaning old or elderly. جوان works equally as an adjective, یک دختر جوان (a young girl), and as a noun, جوانهای امروز (the youth of today). In informal speech, it can also be used as a respectful form of address between men of roughly similar age, similar to calling someone mate or pal in English.

- اون یه پسر جوان و باهوشه. (un ye pesar-e javân o bâhushe.) “He is a young and clever boy.”
- جوانهای ایران دوست دارن زبان یاد بگیرن. (javânhây irân dust dâran zabân yâd begirun.) “Iranian youth like to learn languages.”
- هنوز جوونی، عجله نکن. (hanooz javuni, ajale nakon.) “You are still young, do not rush.”
- جوون، میدونی اینجا بانک کجاست؟ (javun, miduni injâ bânk kojâst?) “Hey, do you know where the bank is around here?”
Cultural note
Iran has one of the youngest populations in the Middle East, and the word جوان carries significant cultural and political weight. The phrase نسل جوان (nasl-e javân), the young generation, appears constantly in social commentary, media, and policy discussions. In Persian poetry, جوان often appears alongside beauty, energy, and hope, while its opposite پیر carries wisdom and experience. The phrase جوانی غنیمت است, youth is a treasure, is a widely circulated proverb urging people to make the most of their younger years.
