What it means

عنوان (onvân) means title, heading, label, or the name given to something to describe its nature or role. The word is borrowed from Arabic عُنْوَان (unwan), meaning address, title, or heading, from the root ع-ن-و (‘a-n-w). In Persian it is used for book titles (عنوان کتاب, onvân-e ketâb), chapter headings, job titles, and academic titles. Its most important grammatical function is in the compound preposition به عنوان (be onvân-e), meaning as, in the capacity of, or in the role of: به عنوان مدیر کار می‌کنه (be onvân-e modir kâr mikone, she works as a manager). This construction is ubiquitous in both formal writing and educated spoken Persian and is a crucial building block for describing roles, functions, and identities.

How to use it

• عنوان مقاله‌ات چیه؟ (onvân-e maghâleât chiye?) “What is the title of your article?”
• به عنوان دوست بهت میگم. (be onvân-e dust behet migam.) “I’m telling you as a friend.”
• اون به عنوان نماینده شرکت اومد. (un be onvân-e namâyande-ye sherkat omad.) “He came as the company’s representative.”
• عنوان شغلیم مدیر پروژه‌ست. (onvân-e shoghliym modir-e parvazhe-st.) “My job title is project manager.”

Cultural note

In Iranian formal culture, عنوان carries considerable social significance. Job titles, academic degrees, and honorifics are addressed explicitly in introductions and correspondence, and using the wrong عنوان for a person of seniority is a noticeable social misstep. The phrase به عنوان has also become a marker of educated or professional speech: it appears constantly in news broadcasts, academic papers, official letters, and business meetings, to the point where learners of Persian will encounter it within the first weeks of exposure to formal written or spoken material.
