نژاد

What it means

نژاد (nezhâd) means “race, lineage, breed, stock.” It is an old Persian word, not an Arabic loanword, and it appears in classical poetry to mean noble descent or family origin. Today it covers three overlapping senses: biological race or breed in animals (نژاد سگ, nezhâd-e sag, dog breed), family lineage in humans (از نژاد بزرگ, az nezhâd-e bozorg, of great lineage), and human race in the broad anthropological sense.

Cultural context

The word is technically neutral but carries baggage. In the early 20th century, Iranian state nationalism under the Pahlavi dynasty leaned heavily on the framing of an “Aryan race” (نژاد آریایی, nezhâd-e âriyâ’i), borrowing from European race science of the period. Iran was renamed from Persia in 1935 partly to foreground this Aryan identity. School textbooks, monuments, and state speeches all used نژاد in this charged way. The legacy is that the word in human contexts now sounds heavier than its English equivalent.

Contemporary Iranians use the word carefully. In casual conversation about people, words like قوم (qowm, ethnic group) or ملیت (melliyat, nationality) often replace it. Younger urban speakers especially avoid the framing of “Aryan” descent because it has been associated with both the late Pahlavi monarchy and certain right-wing diaspora politics. In animal contexts, however, the word is fully neutral and used freely: dog breeders, horse trainers, and bird fanciers all speak about نژاد without baggage. In journalism and academic writing, نژادپرستی (nezhâd-parasti) is the standard word for racism and is used directly. The word also surfaces in everyday animal husbandry: at livestock markets, dog shows, and racing-pigeon keepers’ meets, نژاد is a clean, technical term and no one flinches at it.

In poetry, the older sense of “noble lineage” still echoes. Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh repeatedly uses نژاد to mean royal or heroic descent, the proof of a character’s worth. That literary register lives in formal speech, in marriage proposals where elders speak of someone being از نژاد خوب (“of good lineage”), meaning from a respectable family. Younger Iranians find the framing dated but recognize it.
