What it means

گونه (gune) is a native Persian word with two closely linked uses. In everyday speech it means “kind” or “type,” as in a kind of fruit or a type of music. In biology and ecology it means “species,” the technical sense you will see in nature documentaries, conservation reports, and school textbooks. The two meanings share the same root idea: a distinct grouping or variety. A close synonym in the biological sense is نژاد (nezhad), though that word tilts more toward breed or race. The Arabic-rooted نوع (no’) also means “type” and is widely used, but گونه is the preferred native Persian term in scientific and environmental contexts.

How to use it

  • این گونه در ایران در خطر انقراضه. (in gune dar Iran dar khatar-e enqeraze.) “This species is endangered in Iran.”
  • چند گونه‌ی پرنده تو این جنگل زندگی می‌کنن. (chand gune-ye parande tu in jangal zendegi mi-konan.) “Several species of bird live in this forest.”
  • هر گونه‌ای به زیستگاه خاص خودش نیاز داره. (har gune-i be zistgah-e khass-e khodesh niyaz dare.) “Every species needs its own specific habitat.”
  • پلنگ ایرانی یه گونه‌ی نادره. (palang-e Irani ye gune-ye nadere.) “The Persian leopard is a rare species.”

Cultural note

Iran is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, home to habitats ranging from the Alborz mountain forests to the Kavir desert and the Persian Gulf coastline. The word گونه appears constantly in Iranian environmental journalism and in the work of the Department of Environment (سازمان محیط زیست). Conservation campaigns for the Asiatic cheetah (یوزپلنگ آسیایی) and the Persian leopard have made گونه در خطر انقراض a phrase that many Iranians recognize from news headlines. Academic biology texts also use the Latin-derived اسپیشیز alongside گونه, but in public and media language گونه stands alone.
