نمک

The metaphor extends beyond loyalty. نمک (namak) also means charm, especially the charm of a person who has wit and presence at a table. To say someone is نمکین (namakin), "salty," is a high compliment in Persian: it means they have grace, they're funny, their company seasons the room. A boring person, by contrast, is بی‌نمک (bi-namak), "saltless," flat and forgettable. Iranian comedians, hosts, and storytellers are praised for their namak. The salt shaker is نمکدان (namakdân) in formal Persian and نمکدون (namakdun) in spoken.
