What it means
مشاوره درسی (moshâvere-ye darsi) is the formal and everyday term for academic counseling or academic advising, the process by which a student consults a specialist about course selection, study difficulties, or educational planning. Both components trace to Arabic: مشاوره (moshâvere) comes from Arabic مشاورة (mushâwara, mutual consultation), and درسی (darsi) is the adjective form of درس (dars, from Arabic دَرْس, lesson or study). The person providing the guidance is a مشاور درسی (moshâvar-e darsi, academic counselor or advisor). In spoken Persian this phrase is used exactly as written; there is no significantly different colloquial shortening, though students sometimes just say moshâverat (counseling session) when the academic context is already understood.

- وقت مشاوره درسی گرفتم برای ترم آینده. (vaght-e moshâvere-ye darsi gereftam barâye term-e âyande.) “I booked an academic counseling appointment for next semester.”
- مشاور درسی گفت باید واحد ریاضی رو پاس کنم قبل از هر چیزی. (moshâvar-e darsi goft bâyad vâhed-e riyâzi ro pâs konam ghabl az har chizi.) “The academic counselor said I have to pass the math credit before anything else.”
- مشاوره درسی توی مدرسهشون رایگانه. (moshâvere-ye darsi tu madrese-shun râygâne.) “Academic counseling at their school is free.”
- نمیدونم چی بخونم، باید یه مشاوره درسی بگیرم. (nemidunam chi bekhunam, bâyad ye moshâvere-ye darsi begiram.) “I do not know what to study, I need to get some academic counseling.”
Cultural note
Academic counseling as a formal institutional service expanded significantly in Iranian universities from the 1990s onward, partly in response to high student dropout and course-failure rates in the competitive entrance system. Many students encounter the concept for the first time after the کنکور (konkur, national university entrance exam), when choosing a major and course load suddenly feels high-stakes. In practice, moshâvere-ye darsi can cover anything from choosing optional courses to addressing study anxiety, and some universities also integrate it with psychological counseling services.
