What it means
موقع (moghe’) means time, moment, occasion, or opportunity. It is borrowed from Arabic مَوْقِع (mawqi’), a noun from the root و-ق-ع (w-q-‘) relating to something falling or landing, and by extension a position or a moment in time. In Persian the word is used neutrally for any point in time or occasion, but it often carries the extra nuance of the right time or the appropriate moment. The colloquial possessive موقعش (moghe’esh) is especially common, meaning the time for it or the right moment for that.
How to use it
- موقعش نیست (moghe’esh nist) “It’s not the right time for that.”
- موقع رفتن بهم بگو (moghe’-e raftan behem begu) “Tell me when it’s time to leave.”
- یه موقعی میفهمی (ye moghe’i mifahmi) “You’ll understand at some point.”
- موقع ناهار کجا بودی؟ (moghe’-e nâhâr kojâ budi?) “Where were you at lunchtime?”
Cultural note
The phrase موقعش نیست (moghe’esh nist, it’s not the right time) is one of the most common soft refusals in Iranian conversation. Rather than saying no directly, a speaker signals that the moment is not yet right, preserving the idea that the door stays open. This fits the broader Iranian preference for indirect communication, where timing and occasion shape whether a request is appropriate rather than the request itself.
