The compound is mixed. مقاله (maqāleh) is Arabic, from the root q-w-l (قول, to say). نویس (nevis) is the present stem of the pure Persian verb نوشتن (neveshtan, to write) and serves as a productive agent suffix in Persian compounds (compare نامه نویس nāme-nevis letter writer, داستان نویس dāstān-nevis story writer, روزنامه نویس ruzname-nevis newspaper writer, تاریخ نویس tārikh-nevis historian). The pattern is one of the most generative in Persian word formation, which is why a learner who masters نویس unlocks a whole rank of profession nouns at once. Maqāle-nevis specifically settled into modern Persian alongside the growth of the Iranian press in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
