What it means

نویسنده (nevisande) means “writer” or “author.” There is a basic entry for nevisande covering everyday usage, the agentive structure (نویس + ـنده), and common collocations. This extended entry goes deeper into the Iranian literary tradition and what it costs to be a writer in Iran.

The word is built from نویس (nevis), the present stem of نوشتن (neveshtan) “to write,” plus the agentive suffix ـنده (-ande). The same pattern gives خواننده (khânande) “reader, singer,” گوینده (guyande) “speaker, anchor,” and فروشنده (forushande) “seller.”

The classical tradition

Persian literature is one of the longest continuous literary traditions on earth. Ferdowsi finished the Shahnameh around the year 1010, sixty thousand verses preserving pre-Islamic Iranian myth and history. Sa’di’s Golestan and Bustan, written in the 13th century, are still required reading in Iranian schools. Hafez, also Shirazi, became Iran’s most quoted poet, his Divan used today for fortune-telling on Yalda night and Nowruz.

Rumi, born in Balkh and buried in Konya, wrote in Persian and is now the best-selling poet in the United States. The classical Persian writer is, by default, also a poet: the prose-fiction tradition is much younger.

Modern Persian fiction

The 20th century shifted Persian writing from poetry to prose. Sadegh Hedayat’s Buf-e Kur (The Blind Owl), published in 1937, broke the form open and is still the most disturbing novel in the language. Forough Farrokhzad rewrote what a woman could put on the page before her death at thirty-two in 1967. Simin Daneshvar’s Savushun was the first major novel by an Iranian woman, published in 1969 and still in print. Mahmoud Dowlatabadi spent a decade writing Kelidar, a 3000-page rural epic.

Diaspora and the political cost

Since 1979, the Iranian writer has often been a diaspora writer. Shahrnush Parsipur wrote Women Without Men in prison, then left. Marjane Satrapi drew Persepolis in Paris. Closer to home, writers who stayed have paid in arrests, work bans, and exile orders. The Writers’ Association of Iran has been targeted for decades, members jailed across every government since the revolution.

To call someone نویسنده in Iran is rarely just a job description. It often signals a relationship to risk.
