خانم

The word entered Persian from Turkic-Mongol courts (compare khanum in Ottoman and Central Asian usage) and became the universal civilian "Mrs." Iranians use خانم freely on the street: a fruit seller calls خانم بفرمایید to a passing customer. Married women keep their birth surname legally, so خانم + surname covers both "Miss" and "Mrs." without distinction.
