What it means
خانم (khânom) is the standard feminine honorific in Persian, covering “Mrs.,” “madam,” and “lady.” It precedes a name (خانم احمدی) or stands alone as a polite vocative for any woman.
How to use it
- خانم احمدی (khânom-e Ahmadi) “Mrs. Ahmadi”
- ببخشید خانم (bebakhshid khânom) “Excuse me, madam”
- خانم دکتر (khânom-e doktor) “Madam Doctor”
Register notes
خانم works across all registers, from shopkeepers to professors. With a name, use خانم + last name (or first name in casual contexts). Strangers use خانم alone as a respectful hail. The masculine pair is آقا. For higher formality in legal or ceremonial settings, the elevated form is سرکار خانم (sarkâr khânom), parallel to جناب for men.
Cultural note
The word entered Persian from Turkic-Mongol courts (compare khanum in Ottoman and Central Asian usage) and became the universal civilian “Mrs.” Iranians use خانم freely on the street: a fruit seller calls خانم بفرمایید to a passing customer. Married women keep their birth surname legally, so خانم + surname covers both “Miss” and “Mrs.” without distinction.
