What it means
کانال (kanâl) is the Persian word for “channel” in the sense of a broadcast feed: a Telegram channel, a YouTube channel, or any one-way or community publication platform. The word arrived in Persian from French “canal,” which is itself part of a broader family of European words tracing back to Latin roots related to pipes and conduits. It has been part of Persian for well over a century in the sense of a waterway or a television channel, so its adoption for online broadcast channels felt entirely natural. In digital speech, کانال almost always means an online channel rather than a geographic canal, which would be specified more carefully. A related term is گروه (goruh), meaning a “group” where members can all post, as opposed to a کانال where only admins broadcast.

- توی کانال تلگرامم اعلام کردم. (tu-ye kanâl-e telegramam elâm kardam.) “I announced it in my Telegram channel.”
- کانال یوتیوبم رو ساب کن. (kanâl-e yutubam ro sâb kon.) “Subscribe to my YouTube channel.”
- چند تا عضو داره این کانال؟ (chand tâ ozv dâre in kanâl?) “How many members does this channel have?”
- یه کانال درباره آشپزی زدم. (ye kanâl darbâre-ye âshpazi zadam.) “I started a cooking channel.”
Cultural note
Telegram channels became the dominant broadcast medium for news, commentary, and entertainment in Iran after 2015, filling a gap left by restricted social media platforms. Some Iranian Telegram channels grew to very large subscriber counts, rivaling traditional broadcast media in reach. The phrase کانال زدن (kanâl zadan), literally “to hit a channel” meaning to start one, became a common expression for launching any kind of online media presence.
