What it means
کامل (kamel) means “complete,” “full,” or “perfect.” It comes from Arabic, from the root ك-م-ل (kamala), and functions primarily as an adjective in Persian. In formal writing it modifies nouns: یک نسخه کامل (a complete copy). In spoken Persian, however, speakers increasingly drop the اً ending and use کامل on its own as a colloquial adverb, as in کامل فهمیدم (I completely understood). This is the adverbially used form of the same root as کاملاً.
How to use it
- یه توضیح کامل بده. (ye tozih kamel bede.) “Give a complete explanation.”
- کامل خوندمش. (kamel khundamash.) “I read it completely.”
- این فرم باید کامل پر بشه. (in form bayad kamel por beshe.) “This form must be filled out completely.”
- اون آدم کاملیه. (un adam kamelie.) “He is a complete person, a man of integrity.”
Cultural note
کامل also appears frequently as a Persian male given name, chosen for its meaning of completeness and perfection. The Arabic root carries connotations of moral and intellectual wholeness, not just physical completeness, which made it a popular choice for names across the Persian-speaking world. In everyday speech, calling someone or something کامل is a genuine compliment.
