What it means
تکامل (takâmol) means “evolution” in biology and “development” or “advancement” more broadly. It is an Arabic loanword built on the Arabic verb pattern tafâ’ul (تفاعل) applied to the root ك-م-ل, which carries the meaning of completeness or perfection. The word entered classical Persian through Arabic scholarly tradition long before Darwin, where it conveyed gradual perfection or fulfillment. In modern Persian it became the standard translation for biological evolution as a technical term. A related word is پیشرفت (pishraft), a native Persian compound meaning progress or advancement, which overlaps with تکامل in non-scientific contexts but lacks the evolutionary biology sense.

When Darwin’s ideas reached Iran in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, existing Arabic-Persian morphology provided a ready-made term. In Afghanistan and Tajikistan the word is equally understood, though the degree of public debate around evolutionary biology differs by context.
