What it means
حوصله (hosele) is patience-as-mood, your mental bandwidth in the moment. It is not the long-term virtue of sabr (endurance), but a daily reservoir that fills and empties.
How to use it
- حوصله ندارم (hosele nadâram) “I’m not in the mood, I have no bandwidth”
- حوصلهام سر رفت (hosele-am sar raft) “I got bored, my patience ran out”
- با حوصله توضیح داد (bâ hosele towzih dâd) “He explained patiently”
Cultural depth
Hosele is the Iranian way of declining without offending. Saying hosele nadâram closes a topic without rejecting the person. Friends accept it as a complete answer.

Neutral, used hourly in spoken Tehrani. Differs from sabr: sabr is endurance over time, hosele is your tolerance level today.
Etymology
From Arabic root ḥ-w-ṣ-l, meaning gathering or accumulating. Persian usage shifted the sense to a stored capacity for patience that can be depleted or replenished.
