غمزه
Meaning
معنیModern Iranian Persian still uses غمزه, mostly in literary or knowingly elevated speech, often with a slight self-aware irony. To say someone is throwing ghamze at you is to use a word from the poetic register to describe a real flirtation, and the gap between the elevated word and the ordinary scene is part of the joke. The word survives in song lyrics, especially in classical-style Iranian vocal music (آواز, âvâz), where the ghamze of the beloved is a constant subject. The word does not appear much in casual modern speech, and learners who use it in everyday conversation will sound like they are quoting Hafez, which is sometimes the desired effect.
