What it means
فیلسوف (filsuf) is the Persian word for a philosopher, a person whose professional or vocational work is philosophy. The word is not casual. You do not call your uncle who likes to argue at dinner a filsuf, even sarcastically; the sarcastic register uses عاقل (aqel) or فکر میکنه فیلسوفه (fekr mikoneh filsufeh, he thinks he is a philosopher). The neutral, serious filsuf names someone whose name appears in a history of philosophy: Plato, Kant, Avicenna, Mulla Sadra.
It pairs with فلسفه (falsafe, philosophy) as the practitioner term. A filsuf does falsafe the way a شاعر (shaer) does شعر (sher).
How to use it
Use filsuf for the canonical figures and for serious contemporary thinkers working on the classical questions. For lighter intellectual work, use متفکر (motafakker) or نظریهپرداز (nazariye-pardaz).

Where it comes from
The word travels three languages. Greek φιλόσοφος (philosophos, lover of wisdom) entered Arabic as فیلسوف (faylasuf) during the Abbasid translation movement of the 8th-10th centuries, when Baghdad scholars rendered Greek philosophical texts into Arabic. Persian inherited the term directly from Arabic, with its original Greek shape barely disturbed. The Persian pronunciation drops the diphthong and gives fil-SUF.
The Iranian canon of filsufs is dense. Ibn Sina (Avicenna, c. 980-1037) wrote the Shifa and the Qanun and is the Aristotelian peak of medieval Islamic philosophy. Suhrawardi (c. 1154-1191), executed in Aleppo at 37, founded the school of Illumination (حکمت اشراق, hekmat-e eshraq), grounding philosophy in light metaphysics. Mulla Sadra (c. 1571-1640) of Shiraz wrote the Asfar al-Arba’a and articulated transcendent wisdom (حکمت متعالیه, hekmat-e mota’aliyeh), the last great original system in the Islamic tradition.
A note on the Pure Persian alternative
Some writers prefer حکیم (hakim) or دانشمند (daneshmand) when reaching for a non-Arabic register, though hakim leans toward sage and daneshmand now means scientist. None of these fully replace filsuf; the borrowed word has stuck.
