What it means

فلسفه (falsafe) is philosophy. The word covers the entire intellectual tradition: ancient Greek philosophy, Islamic philosophy, European philosophy, modern philosophy. In Iran, the term carries serious cultural weight because Persian-speaking thinkers (Avicenna, Suhrawardi, Mulla Sadra) produced some of the most ambitious philosophical work in the medieval and early modern Islamic world, much of it written in Arabic but read, taught, and continued in Persian.

Everyday Persian also uses falsafe more loosely, the way English uses “the philosophy of” to mean a guiding principle: فلسفه‌ی زندگی (falsafe-ye zendegi, life philosophy), فلسفه‌ی این کار (falsafe-ye in kār, the philosophy behind this action). The looser sense lives alongside the technical one.

Where it comes from

This is the classic three-language transmission story. The Greek φιλοσοφία (philosophía, love of wisdom) was Arabicized in the early Abbasid period as فَلْسَفَة (falsafa), one of the rare Greek loanwords in Arabic, brought in by the translators of the Beit al-Hikmah in Baghdad in the eighth and ninth centuries. Arabic gave the word an Arabic-sounding shape and absorbed it into its lexicon. Persian then borrowed it from Arabic in the form فلسفه (falsafe), and from Persian it eventually entered Turkish, Urdu, and other regional languages.

The path is: Greek φιλοσοφία → Arabic فَلْسَفَة → Persian فلسفه. Each step shifted the pronunciation and the orthography while keeping the meaning intact. The word is a perfect example of how Greek learning entered Islamic civilization and from there became part of Persian intellectual vocabulary.

How to use it

Common patterns: فلسفه خواندن (falsafe khāndan, to study philosophy), استاد فلسفه (ostād-e falsafe, professor of philosophy), and the everyday metaphor فلسفه‌ش چیه؟ (falsafash chiye, what’s the philosophy of it, what’s the underlying idea).

In Persian intellectual life

Falsafe is not a neutral academic label in Iran. The discipline has had political weight at different points in history: medieval scholars who wrote falsafe were sometimes attacked by traditional clerics who preferred kalam (Islamic theology) and fiqh (jurisprudence); modern reformist thinkers have used falsafe as a vehicle for arguing about democracy, rights, and modernization; the Islamic Republic has its own state-aligned philosophy programs alongside more independent ones. To say someone is a فیلسوف (filsuf, philosopher) in modern Iran is to place them in a long and politically charged tradition.
