What it means
روشنفکر (rowshanfekr) literally reads bright-minded, a calque of the European free-thinker / intellectual. It names a person who reads, writes, takes positions on public questions, and locates themselves against tradition. The word is politically saturated. In Iran you cannot say rowshanfekr neutrally; the listener will hear either admiration or contempt depending on who is speaking.
Among urban readers of literature and the diaspora, rowshanfekr usually keeps its admiring sense: a Shamlou, a Forough, a Daryush Shayegan. In conservative religious discourse and in much of the post-1979 state press, rowshanfekr has shaded toward the pejorative, often paired with غربزده (gharbzadeh, westoxified) and used to mean a deracinated mimic of Western thought.
The Al-e Ahmad fracture
The pejorative reading has a single load-bearing source. In 1962 Jalal Al-e Ahmad published غربزدگی (Gharbzadegi, westoxification), an essay that diagnosed Iranian intellectuals as cut off from Iran, mimicking the West, useful to colonial powers, and unable to act on behalf of their own society. The book was banned, circulated underground, and became one of the most cited Persian prose works of the 20th century. After 1979 the Islamic Republic adopted its framing wholesale: a rowshanfekr, in the official lexicon, is precisely the gharbzadeh figure Al-e Ahmad attacked.
The fracture has never closed. Reading the word today, you have to know who is speaking before you know what it means.
How to use it
Use rowshanfekr when the political weight is what you want; the word will not sit politely. If you want a neutral term for an intellectual, use متفکر (motafakker) or اندیشمند (andishmand).
shamlou yeki az rowshanfekr-haye bozorg-e qarn-e bistom bud.
Shamlou was one of the great intellectuals of the 20th century.
شاملو یکی از روشنفکرهای بزرگ قرن بیستم بود.
al-e ahmad migoft rowshanfekr-haye irani gharbzadeh shodeand.
Al-e Ahmad said Iranian intellectuals had become westoxified.
آل احمد میگفت روشنفکرهای ایرانی غربزده شدهاند.
Where it comes from
The compound is Pure Persian: روشن (rowshan, bright, lit) plus فکر (fekr, thought, Arabic-origin but fully assimilated). The word was coined in the late Qajar and early Pahlavi period as the Persian rendering of intellectuel / intelligentsia, parallel to similar coinings in Ottoman Turkish and Arabic. The neutral surface masks the importing of a European social category whose fit with Iranian society has been contested ever since.
