حکمت is the Persian-Arabic name for the philosophical tradition that runs from Avicenna (Ibn Sînâ) through Suhrawardi and Mulla Sadra. حکمت متعالیه (hekmat-e mota'âliye) "transcendent philosophy" is Mulla Sadra's school, still studied in Qom seminaries today. So when an Iranian uses the word, the high register of Islamic philosophy is sitting in the background, even in a casual sentence.
