حکمت

What it means

حکمت (hekmat) is not the everyday cleverness of عقل (aql) or the street smarts of زرنگی (zerangi). It is the deeper kind of wisdom: the understanding of why a thing is the way it is, why a tragedy happened, why a saying carries truth. Iranians say فلسفه و حکمت (falsafe-vo hekmat) “philosophy and wisdom” as the standard pairing for the contemplative life.

The word has a religious gear and an everyday gear, and Iranians switch between them without friction. حکمت الهی (hekmat-e elâhi) “divine wisdom” is the answer believers give to terrible events. حکمتش چی بود؟ (hekmat-esh chi bud?) “what was the wisdom of it?” is what a friend asks when something inexplicable happened.

Cultural context

حکمت is the Persian-Arabic name for the philosophical tradition that runs from Avicenna (Ibn Sînâ) through Suhrawardi and Mulla Sadra. حکمت متعالیه (hekmat-e mota’âliye) “transcendent philosophy” is Mulla Sadra’s school, still studied in Qom seminaries today. So when an Iranian uses the word, the high register of Islamic philosophy is sitting in the background, even in a casual sentence.

In daily speech, حکمتش چی بود؟ has become a way of asking “why did this happen?” without demanding a literal answer. The phrase concedes that you may never know, that the wisdom is hidden, and that asking is partly an act of grief. Iranians often pair it with the response خدا داناست (khodâ dânâst) “God is the knower,” closing the conversation gently.

The word also names a category of saying. حکمت‌های سعدی (hekmat-hâ-ye Sa’di) “the wisdoms of Sa’di” refers to the proverb-like couplets in the Bustan and Golestan that Iranians still quote at dinner. So حکمت is at once a discipline, a divine attribute, a daily question, and a kind of literary unit. Few Persian words do this much work.
