What it means

افغانستان (Afghânestân) is the Persian name for Afghanistan, and it is a compound of two elements. The first element «افغان» (Afghân) is an ethnic name referring to the Pashtun people, whose exact origin is disputed: some scholars trace it to a Sanskrit root, others to a local pre-Islamic term. The second element «ستان» (-stan) is the native Persian suffix meaning “land of” or “place of.” Dari Persian, one of the two official languages of Afghanistan, is mutually intelligible with Iranian Persian. A resident or citizen is «افغان» (Afghân) or «افغانستانی» (Afghânestâni) in more formal usage.

How to use it

  • افغانستان کشور همسایه شرقی ایرانه. (Afghânestân keshvar-e hamsâye-ye sharqi-ye Irâneh.) “Afghanistan is Iran’s eastern neighbouring country.”
  • خیلی از افغان‌ها برای کار اومدن ایران. (Kheyli az Afghânâ barâye kâr umadan Irân.) “Many Afghans came to Iran for work.”
  • کابل پایتخت افغانستانه. (Kâbol pâytakht-e Afghânestâneh.) “Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan.”
  • فارسی دری توی افغانستان خیلی شبیه فارسی ایرانیه. (Fârsi-ye Dari tuye Afghânestân kheyli shabih-e Fârsi-ye Irâniyeh.) “Dari Persian in Afghanistan is very similar to Iranian Persian.”

Cultural note

Afghanistan and Iran share deep linguistic, cultural, and historical bonds. Dari Persian, spoken by a large portion of Afghans, is a variety of the same Persian language used in Iran, and classical poets such as Rumi and Jami were born in what is today Afghanistan. Iran hosts one of the largest Afghan diaspora populations in the world, with millions of Afghan refugees and migrants having settled there over several decades of conflict in Afghanistan. This has made Afghan culture, food, and accents a familiar part of daily life in Iranian cities.
