What it means

انسان (ensân) means human being, person, or humankind. The word is borrowed from Arabic إنسان (insân), whose root is debated among Arabic linguists; one view connects it to the root أ-ن-س (a-n-s) carrying the sense of familiarity and sociability, reflecting the idea of the human as a social creature. In Persian everyday speech انسان often implies a quality beyond mere biology: calling someone یه انسان خوب (a good human being) is a moral statement, not just a descriptive one. The plural is انسان‌ها (ensânhâ). For the word person in a neutral, non-philosophical sense, Iranians more often use آدم (âdam) in colloquial speech or شخص (shakhs) in more formal contexts. انسان occupies the elevated, thoughtful register.

Cultural note

In classical Persian poetry and philosophy, انسان carries a cosmic dignity. Poets like Rumi and Hafez use the word to describe humankind as the highest station of creation, the being capable of divine love and reason. This is why انسان feels weightier than the colloquial آدم in modern speech: even ordinary Iranians sense the philosophical tradition behind it. When someone calls you انسان خوبی هستی (you are a good human being) rather than just آدم خوبی هستی, the compliment lands differently, as if your whole humanity, not just your personality, is being affirmed.
