دوست‌جان

Iranian friendships carry more verbal warmth than many English-speaking cultures expect. Calling someone دوست‌جان is not romantic. It is the standard register for adult close friendship. Diaspora Iranians in Los Angeles, London, Berlin keep the phrasing alive in WhatsApp messages and voice notes, often as the only Persian phrase in an otherwise English text. The phrase carries the emotional contract of the friendship: I see you, I value you, I would not address you any other way.
