دوستت دارم (dustat dâram) is the standard Persian way to say “I love you” or “I like you.” It is a compound verb formed from دوست (dust), meaning friend, and داشتن (dâshtan), the pure Persian verb meaning to have or to hold. The literal sense is therefore “I have you as a friend,” but in practice it covers the full range from deep romantic love to casual affection for a friend or family member. Context and tone distinguish which meaning is intended. A stronger, more passionate alternative is عاشقتم (âsheghetam), meaning “I am in love with you,” which draws on the Arabic-rooted word عاشق (âshegh).
