What it means

دایرکت (direct) is the Persian noun for a direct message, specifically on Instagram. It refers to both the message itself and the Instagram Direct inbox as a place. The word is colloquial and constant in Iranian internet life, especially among Gen Z, online shoppers, and the entire Iranian Instagram commerce economy.

When Iranians say “دایرکت میام برات” (direct miyam barat, I will DM you), it is shorthand for: I will send you a private message on Instagram, away from the public comment thread, where we can talk freely or do business.

How it works in daily life

Instagram is the dominant social platform in Iran by a wide margin, and Direct is the back-channel for everything. Small businesses sell through Direct (you DM the page, they confirm the price, you transfer money to a bank card, they ship to your address). Boys hit on girls in Direct. Estranged cousins reconnect in Direct. Tutors take clients in Direct. The official feed is the storefront; Direct is where the real work happens.

Iranian users often say “دایرکت بده” (direct bedeh, give me a DM) or “دایرکتم بزن” (direct-am bezan, hit my direct), inviting someone to move the conversation private.

The Iranian Instagram economy

An estimated 200,000 to 500,000 small Iranian businesses run on Instagram, with Direct as the order desk. Clothing resellers, home bakers, jewelry artists, language tutors, therapists, real-estate agents, all of them route customers through DM. The combination of weak e-commerce infrastructure, sanctions blocking international payment platforms, and a population already glued to Instagram has turned Direct into Iran’s de facto private message economy. The word دایرکت carries that weight when Iranians use it.

If a learner wants to do anything real in Iranian Persian, دایرکت is one of the first internet nouns to know. The word will appear in conversations, in business interactions, in flirtations, in any context where someone wants to take a chat private. Adopt it the same way Iranians did, without trying to find a Pure Persian replacement. The replacement does not exist in active speech.
