Each piece: دست (dast) hand, ش (-ash) his or her, به (be) to, ش (-sh) it, نرسید (naresid) did not arrive. “His hand did not arrive at it.” The image is exactly what the words say: a person reaching for something on a high shelf, or trying to grab a bird about to fly off, or stretching toward a coin spinning across the floor. The hand goes out, the fingers stretch, but the distance is too much. Persian uses the body part most associated with action, the hand, to picture a goal that effort alone could not close.

The figurative meaning

You wanted it. You tried. It did not happen. The idiom covers a wide range: a job offer that went to someone else, a flat you almost rented, a person you almost dated, a deadline that ran out before the work was finished, a parent or grandparent you wanted to see one more time before they died. The idiom belongs to a family of reach-and-grasp expressions. به آرزویش نرسید (be ârezuyash naresid) “he did not reach his wish” is the more poetic register, often said about people who died before fulfilling a dream. از دست رفت (az dast raft) “it went from the hand,” was lost, slipped away. آب از سرش گذشت (âb az sarash gozasht) “water passed over his head,” it was already too late.
