What it means
در نتیجه (dar natije) means “as a result,” “consequently,” or “as a consequence.” It is a prepositional phrase acting as a discourse connector. The first element is the Persian preposition در (dar, in/within), and the second is نتیجه (natije), borrowed from Arabic نَتِيجَة (natija, result or conclusion). The phrase signals that what follows is the outcome of what was just described. It overlaps in meaning with بنابراین (banâbarin, therefore) but در نتیجه focuses more on a factual outcome, while بنابراین emphasizes logical deduction. In informal speech both are replaced by پس (pas).
How to use it
- باران زیادی بارید؛ در نتیجه جاده بسته شد. (bârân-e ziâdi bârid; dar natije jâde baste shod) “It rained heavily; as a result the road was closed.”
- در نتیجه این تصمیم، خیلی چیزها عوض شد. (dar natije-ye in tasmim, khéyli chizâ avaz shod) “As a result of this decision, many things changed.”
- اون سخت کار کرد و در نتیجه ترفیع گرفت. (un sakht kâr kard o dar natije tarfi’ gereft) “She worked hard and as a result she got a promotion.”
- در نتیجه میبینیم که این روش کارساز نیست. (dar natije mibinim ke in ravesh kârsâz nist) “As a result, we see that this method is not effective.”
Cultural note
در نتیجه is the preferred connector in Persian academic and scientific writing when the author wants to state a factual consequence rather than a logical inference. It appears constantly in newspaper reporting, research conclusions, and formal letters. In school writing exercises it is one of the first discourse markers taught alongside بنابراین and بعلاوه (be-alâve, in addition). Because it directly contains an Arabic noun, the Pure Persian Movement has not produced a widely used native alternative: نتیجه is so embedded in Persian that calques feel awkward, and speakers simply use the phrase as is.
