The double meaning of dâne (grain + classifier) is not coincidental. The classifier sense grew out of the noun: counting one item became counting one "grain" of that item. The same path exists in many languages with classifier systems. Iranian children learning to count fruit at the bazaar grow up hearing both versions on the same shopping trip: yek dâne anâr (one pomegranate, the fruit), inside which lives hezâr dâne (a thousand seeds, the grains).
