چهارشنبه‌سوری

/ chaharshanbe-suri /
noun  ·  fire-jumping festival

Meaning

معنی
۱

Built from چهارشنبه (chahârshanbe, "Wednesday") + سور (sur, "feast, festivity") + ی (-i, suffix). The festival is pre-Islamic, rooted in Zoroastrian fire reverence. Held on the eve of the last Wednesday of the Persian year. The chant transfers the body's "yellowness" (sickness, weakness) to the fire and absorbs its "redness" (vitality, warmth) in return. The Islamic Republic has tried to discourage the celebration; Iranians persist anyway.

How it's used

Chahârshanbe-suri (the festive Wednesday before Nowruz) sees stronger public celebration in Tehran, Tabriz, and other large cities, where firework explosions and bonfires fill streets and parks; the noise level is often a public order concern. Smaller cities (Yazd, Kerman) tend toward quieter household-level fires. Iranian Zoroastrians, who trace the ritual to pre-Islamic fire reverence, have their own observances in Yazd and the Kerman region. Diaspora communities adapt with backyard fires or candles where local laws prohibit fireworks.
