What it means
بای (bây) means “bye.” It is a direct borrowing from English, used to end casual conversations and texts. The tone is light and friendly, never formal.

- بای، فعلاً (bây, fe-elan) “bye, see you”
- بای بای (bây bây) “bye bye”
- اوکی بای (owki bây) “OK bye”
How it entered Persian
“Bye” arrived in Persian after 2000 through internet culture, English-language media, and youth slang. Older generations still prefer خداحافظ or بدرود for goodbyes. The English form spread fastest in chat apps and on Instagram.
Cultural note
Saying بای to a grandparent or in a work setting will sound disrespectful or childish. It belongs to friend-to-friend register, especially in Tehran and among teenagers and twenty-somethings. Texting بای بای with extra vowels (بای بایییی) adds warmth.
