What it means
اسکیتبورد (eskit-bord) is borrowed directly from the English word skateboard. It refers to the flat board with four wheels used for riding and performing tricks, as well as to the sport itself. The word entered Persian in the 1990s and 2000s as skateboarding spread among young Iranians, and no native Persian substitute has displaced it. In casual speech the shorter form اسکیت (eskit) is also used, borrowing from the English word skate.
How to use it
- برادرم اسکیتبورد سوار میشود. (barâdaram eskit-bord savâr mi-shavad.) “My brother rides a skateboard.”
- اسکیتبوردم را توی پارک فراموش کردم. (eskit-bordam ro tu-ye pârk farâmush kardam.) “I forgot my skateboard in the park.”
- یاد گرفتن اسکیتبورد سخته. (yâd gereftan-e eskit-bord sakhte.) “Learning to skateboard is hard.”
- بعضی شهرها پارک اسکیتبورد دارن. (ba’zi shahr-hâ pârk-e eskit-bord dâran.) “Some cities have skateboard parks.”
Cultural note
Skateboarding is a relatively recent addition to Iranian urban culture, mainly popular among teenagers and young adults in large cities like Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz. Because public spaces in Iran have restrictions on mixed-gender socialising, skate parks have become one of the more open settings where young people gather informally. The sport was added to the Olympic Games at Tokyo 2020, which raised its profile internationally and in Iran. Iranian skaters share content widely on Instagram and YouTube, creating a small but visible community online.
