What it means
والیبال (vâleybâl) means volleyball, the team sport in which two teams of six players hit an inflated ball back and forth over a high net, trying to make it land in the opponent’s court. The word is borrowed from English “volleyball” and has been part of Persian sporting vocabulary for decades. Volleyball is sometimes affectionately called والی (vâli) in informal contexts, though والیبال remains the standard full form.

- والیبال ساحلی رو دوست دارم. (Vâleybâl-e sâheli ro dust dâram.) “I love beach volleyball.”
- تیم ملی والیبال ایران خیلی قویه. (Tim-e melli-ye vâleybâl-e Irân kheyli ghaviyeh.) “Iran’s national volleyball team is very strong.”

Cultural note
Volleyball holds a special place in Iranian sport because the men’s national team has been one of the top sides in the world, reaching the top five in the FIVB World Rankings and winning multiple Asian Volleyball Championships. Tall Iranian players with strong technical training have attracted attention from top European leagues. The sport is popular at recreational level too, played in parks, school yards, and on the Caspian coast where beach volleyball is a summer staple.
