بدبختی

Iranian fatalism gives بدبختی its weight. The belief that بخت (bakht) is dealt at birth means a wretched life is not a personal failing, it is a hand you were given. This produces both resignation and a particular kind of solidarity: when one Iranian tells another چه بدبختی, they are agreeing that the universe was unfair, not lecturing the sufferer about life choices.
