What it means
تجارت (tejârat) means trade or commerce, referring to the organized buying and selling of goods and services. It is an Arabic masdar noun from the root ت-ج-ر, the same root that gives تاجر (merchant). In Persian it covers both international trade, as in تجارت خارجی (foreign trade), and general commercial activity. A related term is بازرگانی (bâzargâni), which is Persian-origin and largely synonymous, though تجارت tends to appear more in formal or legal contexts while بازرگانی is common in official ministry names.
How to use it
- تجارت با چین خیلی گسترش پیدا کرده. (tejârat bâ chin kheyli gostaresh peydâ karde.) “Trade with China has expanded a lot.”
- کارش تجارت فرشه. (kâresh tejârat-e farsh-e.) “His business is carpet trading.”
- وزارت تجارت قوانین جدید صادر کرد. (vezârat-e tejârat qavânin-e jadid sâder kard.) “The Ministry of Trade issued new regulations.”
- تجارت الکترونیک تو ایران داره رشد میکنه. (tejârat-e elektronik tu irân dâre roshd mikone.) “E-commerce is growing in Iran.”
Cultural note
Iran has a trading history spanning thousands of years, and تجارت reflects that legacy. The Silk Road passed through Iranian territory, making Persian merchants central to ancient commerce across Asia and the Middle East. Today, the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade (وزارت صنعت، معدن و تجارت) oversees commercial policy, and the word tejârat appears prominently in company registration documents and chamber of commerce records. The Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture is one of the oldest business institutions in the country.
