What it means

تماس (tamâs) covers three closely related ideas in everyday Persian: physical touch or contact between two surfaces, the act of getting in touch with someone, and most commonly in modern speech, a phone call. It comes from the Arabic root م-س-س (m-s-s), meaning to touch or to make contact. In Iranian daily life تماس گرفتن (tamâs gereftan) is the normal phrase for calling someone on the phone, and you will see تماس on every missed-call notification. The more formal synonym ارتباط (ertebât) is used in bureaucratic or written language, but tamâs is the word you reach for in conversation.

How to use it

  • باهات تماس می‌گیرم (bâhât tamâs migiram) “I will get in touch with you.”
  • چرا تماس نگرفتی؟ (cherâ tamâs nagrefti?) “Why didn’t you call?”
  • شماره تماسم رو داری؟ (shomâre-ye tamâsam ro dâri?) “Do you have my contact number?”
  • تماس مستقیم بگیر (tamâs-e mostaghim begir) “Call directly.”

Cultural note

Iranians rarely text as a first move; a phone call is still the default way to reach family or close friends, which makes تماس گرفتن one of the most-used verb phrases in daily life. WhatsApp and Telegram calls have replaced the traditional landline, but the phrase has stayed the same. On business cards and websites you will always see تماس با ما (tamâs bâ mâ, “contact us”) as the standard label for a contact page or phone section.
